It’s been quite a few months for the Caerphilly Castle Ladies and Girls Football Club Junior section to their club.
Turn the clock back 6 months, and they didn’t exist. Now, they have gone from strength to strength now having two registered teams playing at Under 9 and Under 11 age groups within the South Wales Women’s and Girls’ League (SWWGL).
From humble beginnings back in September, they are taking the league by storm, with both sides improving with every game.
Under 9’s coach Gwyn, whose daughter was one of the first to sign up, says “Megan had wanted to join a team for a while, but we struggled to find one which was easily accessible for her. We contacted Paula the club secretary who expressed the clubs’ desire to get a mini section up and running, so encouraged Megan to come along. She trained with the Ladies team a couple of times and loved it. Everyone was so welcoming to her, so when the opportunity arrived to help set up a new junior section to the club, it was impossible to resist!”
Under 11’s coach James whose daughter Sienna was also one of the first to register sums up what the club is about: “Our philosophy is simple – we want girls to come along, have fun, make friends and get some exercise. Everyone is welcome. The training sessions are great fun. The girl’s enthusiasm is infectious!”
“The speed in which we have grown the junior teams has really exceeded our expectations. Initially, we were hoping to get a team registered by the 2018/2019 season, so seeing 2 teams out on the pitch in league action in February is fantastic. The buzz all the girls get from playing is amazing, and all the other teams, coaches and players have been so welcoming”.
The aim of the club now is to continue to recruit more players, further growing the club, hopefully being able to expand so we can enter teams at all age categories within the SWWGL.
Gwyn adds “What’s been really great to see is how the girls have really bonded within the team. All the girls get on really well, and it’s lovely to see them running around and being active whilst having fun”.
The junior section trains on a Wednesday evening at St. Cenydd Lesiure Centre between 6-7pm, with girls of all abilities welcome.
