Depleted U10s squad travel to Porth

With several absentees due to holidays, injuries and personal commitments Caerphilly travelled to Porth for the latest round of fixtures with only 6 fit players. The situation was only to get more difficult with the last minute withdrawal of Danielle.

The fabulous five of Seren E, Ellie-may, Ava, Sophia and Grace were up for it and ready to give their all.
In the first encounter Hopkinstown were kind enough to drop down to a 5 a side match of 20mins…this would be tiring!

In a really competitive encounter with both teams looking to exploit the wide open spaces and play attractive football chances were always likely. Even so, some controlled defending on both sides meant the score was locked at 0-0 until the last 15 minutes. An injury to Grace saw the yellows drop to three outfield players and move more to a defensive shape to try and hold on for the last 5 minutes. However, this was not how it would unfold. Neat footwork from Sophia, put Ellie-may into space through the middle who In turn switched play back through to the centre left position. Ava only had one thing in her mind and after collecting the ball fired a rasping shot into the bottom right corner of the net. With Grace returning held their nerve to round off the game with no more scores.

The second game saw Caerphilly come up against the mighty Porth outfit. With a large squad on hand Porth kindly donated Millie and Eevie to allow a 7v7 encounter. As now customary Porth attacked from the off and Caerphilly had to weather the early storm. Ava and the superb on the day Ellie-May stood firm and with some excellent support from the on-loan players the game sat scoreless until the last 5 minutes, chances falling on both sides. As the pace of the first game started to tell Caerphilly retreated more and more into their own half. Porth sniffed an opportunity and took it with both hands with two great goals in the closing minutes, the second a spectacular strike from just inside the Caerphilly half.
In the last match Caerphilly faced Sully. As in the last game Sully kindly donated two players, the lively Amelia and Sophia. Caerphilly went on the front foot early on and it was Amelia who showed great skill to get on the score sheet first with a turn powerful shot from the left. It wasn’t long before we a second was added. Good work in midfield between the two Sophia’s put Grace into space and fire her first for several games- a welcome return to the scoresheet! Sully grew in confidence and managed to get a goal back shortly after. Several close shaves later the game was all over and tired legs could be rested. Great play from all involved across the 4 teams.

Ava was deservedly nominated to look after Footy with a controlled all round show of defence and attack on a week where it genuinely could have gone to anyone- a huge effort by all.

Thanks to Porth for hosting superbly and Hopkinstown and Sully (and Porth) for the games and lending players!
