The first set of away fixtures for our Unders 9s this season saw a much depleted squad travel to Port Talbot to face games against Baglan Boys and Girls, and Fairwater.
With two players away, and suffering 3 further late withdrawal, it was left to the fab four of Heidi, Lily, Skyla and Maria to fly the flag for Caerphilly Castles U’9s – though happily supported with a couple of players from the masses of Baglan, of which we were very grateful for.
The first match up against the home team saw a very dominant performance from Baglan, who played some exceptional football at times passing the ball around, making penetrating runs, and some class finishes. Caerphilly on the other hand started a little bewildered and took a while to get into the game. As time progressed however, Skyla and Maria got much more into the game. Lily confidence grew in defence, and Heidi’s tireless pressuring of the opposition led to much more of a contest as the game reached it’s concluding stages. Overall though, a convincing and deserved victory for Baglan.
The 2nd game proved a very different affair. Buoyed by the improvement in their performance towards the end of the first match, Caerphilly started the match in determined fashion. A very competitive and closely fought first half saw the teams go into the break at level.
In the second half the game really turned in its head. Sensing a good chance of victory, the Caerphilly girls upped their game. With Lily looking more and more sturdy in defence, Maria and Skyla were able to concentrate on much more attacking play, with Heidi always the willing runner up front spreading out the play.
With Fairwater tiring, Caerphilly were soon the first to every 50/50 ball, and their dogged determination playing off as the goals started raining in, with all Skyla, Maria and Heidi all coming away with maiden hat tricks. Fairwater kept on going, an managed another goal in reply, but in the end, Caerphilly proved too powerful.
Many thanks to our opponents in today’s matches which were both played with great sportsmanship, and especially to Baglan for their hospitality and lending of players to make sure we could field a team. We look forward to welcoming you to Caerphilly soon.
