Under the clear blue skies, with the splendor of Caerphilly Castle as a backdrop, the Under 11s were faced with daunting opposition this morning in the way of AFC Porth and Fairwater FC.
With a number of players unavailable being the start of half term, the games were reduced to 7-a-side, which meant a lot of open space would be available on the pitch.
1st up was AFC Porth, who have become familiar opposition having played them for twice already over the last couple of weeks, with both sides having previously come away with the spoils.
Caerphilly were quick off the blocks today. Having concentrated in training on Wednesday about being quicker to the ball, the girls put this to good use today, and in the first 10 minutes of the game dominated possession, and harried the opposition throughout. In a complete reversal to last weeks match, Caerphilly seemed to win all 50/50 challenges, and the girls confidence grew as the goals rained in. Holly continued her fine run of form with 2 goals, which was matched by Georgia and a first goal for one of our longest serving players Lucy as a welcome reward for her tireless running throughout.
Credit to Porth, they continued battling throughout, and came away with a couple of great goals themselves. The 2nd half was a much closer affair, with some splendid defending from Megan and Seren thwarting numerous Porth attacks, and the ever reliable Sofija in goal commanding her penalty area.
In the end it was probably a closer game than the scoreling suggested, but excellent performances all round meant the Caerphilly girls were in confident mood going into the 2nd match.
So onto the 2nd game against Fairwater, who having faced them a few times since we formed, we knew was going to be a difficult match.
The opening exchanges were very even. Fairwater displaying some excellent team organisation, with some superb running off the ball. Megan, and Seren again were determined to keep Sofija quiet, and broke many an attack.
It was our Heroic Holly who opened the scoring deep in the first half with a well taken shot, and all added to the belief of the Castle girls that they could match their very impressive opposition.
Fairwater managed an excellent response drawing level going into the break.
The 2nd half continued very much in a similar vein to the 1st. Both teams having periods of great possession, and with the space on the pitch opening more as the girls tired, the match developed very much a basketball feel with each side counter-attacking. It was Caerphilly who made the most of the space in the end, with tireless running from Georgia and Emily, being supported by Lucy and Holly in midfield which resulted in a brace for Emily of well taken goals.
A great morning all round for the girls. Genuinely overwhelmed by how far this team have come in the little over 12 months since we formed.
Many thanks to our visitors form Porth, Fairwater (and Barry) for coming up to us in Caerphilly today, where all the games were played in a fantastic spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.
Have a great half term girls, and looking forward to doing it all again next week!
