In the Juniour Team’s first matchday of 2018, our squad was split in two as we held a derby between our players.

18 girls braved the cold weather, making it a very comptitive 9v9 match on what we will be using as our home team base for forthcoming fixtures.

With the pitch probably a little small for the number of players (though a better option than keeping girls on the sidelines in the cold as substitutes), there wasn’t a great deal of space to be found for much free flowing football.

From the off, all girls showed their intent on competitng for the ball, which meant the game started with a scrappy affair, with few chances being made and players struggling to get time on the ball. A midfiled battle ensued limiting any potent attacking breaks.

Once the initial excitment died down, the game became more structured with players becoming familiar with their roles. Defences stayed on top for the majority of the first half. Chrissy and Grace giving Sophie and Sienna limitied opportunity to attack the goal for Team J, whilst Elin and Tara proved just as effective in breaking down Team G attacks.

Eventually the deadloack was broken when Ruby managed to find Bethan in space in the box, who’s composed finish found the bottom left corner.

Confidence soared for players from Team G following the goal, but the game remained tight, with clear cut chances hard to come by. The game ebbed and flowed between the two teams. Solid play throughout from Sienna, Grace, Ava, Tayla, and Lundun was noticale, but it was Bethan who shone through. Making the difference between the two teams, she was able to find space and finish sublimley thrice more. Not to be outdone, a change of formation from Team J saw Elin move further up the field, and her dogged performance was rewarded with 2 well taken goals. After 30 minutes the score was 4-2.

Playing an extra 10 minutes, and with some girls tiring in the cold conditions, the game spread out a bit. Megan and Sophie both having opportunities to increase the tally for their sides, though some great goal keeping from Sofija and Grace Dodd prevnting further additions to the scoresheet. This was until Grace Olsen managed to latch upon a loose ball in defense to make to 5-2, which was how it finished.

Having 4 debutants making their first apperances for Caerphilly Castle Ladies – Ruby, Scarlett, Ava and Grace D, was great to see and all made a great contribution to the match. The growth of the Junior section is a delight to see, and we’re all very much looking forward to continuing the jounrney.

Mnay thanks to all who attended – players, parents, and supporters alike. Much appreciated.

Anerira, Ava, Bethan, Cerys, Chrissy, Elin, Grace D, Grace O, Heidi, Lundun, Megan, Ruby, Scarlett, Sienna, Sofija, Sophie,
Tayla, Tara.
