Fairwater v Caerphilly Castle Girls

Fairwater v Caerphilly Castle Girls

Date 26th November 2017

K.O.  11am

Venue, Heath Park, Cardiff.

A second game in two weeks for our juniors helped to continue with our youngster’s footballing education. It’s fair to say we were dealt quite a lesson.

With 4 players unavailable, we had Lundun and Heidi making their club debuts in a match I’m sure they won’t forget.

Playing against a well established and experienced Fairwater side, it was clear from the off that this was a quality side we were up against.

From kick off Fairwater’s class was apparent.  The passing, movement and general composure they showed made it very difficult for Caerphilly got get hold of the ball, and we were quickly outdone and conceded after their first attack.

Still getting used to playing competitive football (this being out first game 8v8, and on another new surface (Astroturf)), our girls showed further development in positioning play, and played with determination and resilience throughout.

Under the cosh for a great deal of the game, Layla, Grace and Cerys where kept busy in defence, and succeeded in breaking down many a Fairwater attack, though it was Sofija in goals who clearly shone through as our player of the match.  Brave throughout, she made a host of saves keeping the home side out on countless occasions.

Despite stoic defending, and tenacious play by the likes of Tayla and Lundun, in midfield, Fairwater managed to dominate play, and with clinical finishing managed to put the game beyond doubt after the first 20 minutes.

A couple of breaks, particularly in the final 15 minutes gave Caerphilly a couple of opportunities to get on the score line. Alas. It wasn’t to be.  Once again, the experience of their defensive partnership meant they were able to read the play and breakdown any attacking threat we made.

We’ll learn a lot from this game.  It gives us sight of the level we want to get to, and how far a team can progress when they’ve been playing together for a considerable time.

Many thank to all at Fairwater for the game.  A great bunch of people – players, coaches, parents and all.

We go again!

Sofija, Layla, Cerys, Grace, Tayla, Lundun, Bethan, Sophie, Heidi, Sienna
