Well, it wasn’t meant to be in the end. A valiant display by the Welsh Women last night wasn’t enough to overcome a very strong England team with a 3-0 defeat probably a fair reflection on the game. Well done England, and good luck in the World Cup in France next year.
It’s still not completely over for the Wales ladies in their quest for a first Welsh World Cup appearance since 1958, as there is still a possibility of making it through to the play offs as one of the 4 best placed runner’s up. There’s a lot that need to go our way in other matches to be played over the weekend, but you never know. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!
Regardless of whether Wales make it through or not, one thing for certain is this current group of Welsh players have been a true inspiration for women and girls up across the country, and has hugely increased the profile of ladies football across our nation.
From going an incredible 687 minutes qualifying before conceding a goal on the pitch, or the manner in which they handled themselves with the media, and their interactions with fans throughout the campaign, the Wales Ladies set up can be immensely proud of themselves, as we all are of them as well.
From a club perspective, it was great to take along over 100 players, coaches, volunteers and parents to the game yesterday, covering all sections of the club from Unders 8s to the Ladies.
The result may not have gone the way we were hoping, but all the girls had a great time. It was great to see the youngsters playing together before hand and enjoying each others company.
With the mini section having expanded so much over the last few months, and training now being split between the various age groups, it was great to see all the girls there having a kickabout together before hand at the fan park. All the players, and siblings were clearly having a great time, and falling deeper in love with the beautiful game.
It’s been said before and I’m sure it will be said it again – it’s a great time to be involved in Ladies Football, both in Wales and as part of Caerphilly Castle Ladies and Girls. An exciting future lays in store. Who knows – in 10 /15 years time we may have some of our players out there on the pitch putting on a Welsh jersey preparing for World Cup qualification.
